The International Space Station (ISS) is a spacecraft in Earth orbit that is used as a base for scientific research. Several countries, including the United States and Russia, have built and still maintain the space station. The station is a collection of separate modules that were launched into space and then linked together. The ISS is continuously occupied by astronauts as it orbits Earth.
